Princes Harry and William Honor Their Mother in a Heartwarming Way Every Year on Her Death Anniversary

The royal brothers lost their beloved mother to a car crash in Paris in August 1997 and 22 years on, they still support each other through the day with this annual tradition.

August 31, 1997 will forever be remembered as a tragic day in the history of British royalty. It broke many hearts but the two people who were most hurt that day 22 years ago were Princes Harry and William. Their 36-year-old mother was taken from them when she passed away in Paris due to a car crash. They were young boys back in 1997 when the accident took place and over the years they have processed their grief.

Now, they spend the day with each other and honor her. A royal insider told Us Weekly that the brothers spent the day together, reconnecting, and honoring the late princess. A source told the Sun UK that the brothers depended on each other after Princess Diana's death that even though they have “become different people” now, which is expected from any two brothers.

The Duke of Cambridge, 37, and Duke of Sussex, 34, spend this day every year by clearing up time for each other. As her children, only they knew her as a mischievous and child-like mother. Only they had shared the same experience of her, so they talk about her that day remembering the wonderful time they had together at dinner or lunch at Kensington Palace in London.

“They talk about the little things about Diana that made them laugh: the ski trips and outings to Thorpe Park [a British amusement park]; the effort she went to on their birthdays — all of it,” the insider told Us Weekly, adding that “their other halves and kids join them later.”

They don't just let nostalgia take over the day but like responsible sons of their mother, they discuss how to keep her charity work alive. They "brainstorm ways they can continue her legacy,” adds the insider. “Helping others and being a role model to those less fortunate is at the top of their priority list.”

On the 20th anniversary of Diana's passing in 2017, the brothers joined wellwishers who left their tribute for her outside Kensington Palace gates. This year is expected have special meaning for Harry, who became a father for the first time in March. His wife, Meghan, his son, Archie, and he are going to visit South Africa on an official tour. Reports said that William and Harry could be discussing their mother's work and how Harry can carry it forward during his tour. Harry will also be making solo trips to Botswana, Angola, and Malawi.

During the Angola visit in September, he will be speaking about the condition of the landmine victims – a cause that his mother had also championed in the months. She had also been photographed walking through a cleared Angolan minefield, according to Hello! Magazine.
