Prince William Celebrates 38th Birthday and Father's Day | Previously Unseen Photos of Him Show His Playful Side

Prince William has acknowledged that being a father has changed him and made him more emotional as well as careful.

Prince William just rang in his 38th birthday on June 21 amidst the pandemic while the UK is still in lockdown. The Duke of Cambridge celebrated the day, which coincides with Father's Day this year, with his family. The photos shared by the Cambridges just show how great his bond with his children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, is. He has always addressed the complex relationship he has with fatherhood, something he feels joy about but is also sometimes overwhelmed by.

The royal couple shared a photo with their followers on social media on June 21. "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to share a new picture of The Duke with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis ahead of The Duke’s birthday tomorrow. The picture was taken earlier this month by The Duchess," the tweet said.

The photo shows Prince William sitting on a wooden swing with his youngest, Prince Louis, in his lap. Prince George and Princess Charlotte are standing on the swing. Just like previous special occasions, the photo was taken by Duchess Kate, who's a skilled amateur photographer.

There were more photos from the same series that were shared. In that photo, Prince William is roughing it out with his kids as they tumble with him on the ground. The 38-year-old was lying on the ground while his kids are on top of him. The photos were taken at their Anmer Hall home, where they are quarantining together.

The couple's followers had only good things to say about the couple while wishing Prince William. "Omg!!!!! What a lovely picture they are all so cute and soooo happy!! Thank you for this gift KP!! Happy birthday and happy Father’s Day Prince William! You are amazing," said one follower. Another said, "Wish Princess Diana could experience this beautiful moment."

Earlier this week, the prince and the duchess had stepped out as non-essential services started opening up in the UK. "As non-essential shops start reopening in parts of the UK, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited two independent businesses to hear how they have been impacted...The Duke of Cambridge visited Smiths the Bakers, who have been serving Kings Lynn for 50 years," according to their Instagram. They presented him with a pre-birthday bake as he met them on June 19.

Meanwhile, the wishes have been pouring in for him. "A handsome man, with a stunning wife and three beautiful children. Positively perfect in every way," said one follower. "OMG, Such a wonderful photo!! Sooo beautiful *Cambridges kids! What a happy dad!!" said another.

Being a father has changed him and he has come to accept that. "I'm a lot more emotional than I used to be," said William in the documentary When Ant and Dec Met The Prince: 40 Years of the Prince's Trust, according to Hello! Magazine. "I never used to get too wound up or worried about things. But now the smallest little things, you well up a little more, you get affected by the sort of things that happen around the world or whatever a lot more, I think, as a father."

"Just because you realize how precious life is and it puts it all in perspective," added William, who lost his mother, Princess Diana when he was 14. "The idea of not being around to see your children grow up [is horrible]."

The couple shared two more photos celebrating Father's Day. In one, Prince William is posing with Prince Charles, whom he calls "Papa" and in another Kate Middleton sits with her father, Michael Middleton.

The prince has now lived longer than his mother, Princess Diana, who was only 36 when she died in Paris in 1997 in a car crash along with partner Dodi al Fayed and her bodyguard. Prince William learned to be a hands-on father because of his mother, who made sure that she was a big part of her sons' lives, unlike their largely absent father, Prince Charles. Even in death, she wanted to make sure that their futures were secure.

She left her kids all her assets. Since they were only teens when she died, their money was kept safe until they were old enough to take possession. She left £12,966,022 ($16,011,546) which was reduced to £8,502,330 ($10,499,399) after death duties, according to Mirror UK. While they were growing up, the money had been invested well and they came into more than $20 million. The money came from her settlement from her divorce from Prince Charles, shares, jewelry, cash, and personal items from her Kensington Palace home. In time, Prince William's children will inherit all that he has for their secure futures.
